One Hardworking Storage Space You Probably Haven’t Thought to Clean in a While

When it comes to closets, it’s great that you can literally close the door on what’s inside. But that fact is also what leads to closets, so often, becoming black holes of messes you can’t handle facing (and therefore keep closing the door on).

Sorting through clothes closets or craft closets often becomes a monumental, day- or days-long endeavor. But getting it done feels so incredibly good; it’s one of those projects you text your mom or call your partner to come gaze at for a few. Who wouldn’t want that kind of satisfaction right now?

This weekend, you’re going to clean a closet, but not one of the obvious big-project ones. You’re going to clean one that gets far dirtier than most, but that probably gets cleaned less than most. Think you don’t have one? I bet you do.

This Weekend: Clean out a utility closet, like your shoes and coats closet, or cleaning closet.

If you’re fortunate enough to have one, utility closets can take a beating. When you go to put away your shoes or hang up the broom, it’s inevitable that dirt, crumbs, and pine needles will fall off and accumulate on the floor.

Whether it’s outside dirt you don’t want to traipse around the house, or the tools you use to remove the dust and dirt and grime you can’t keep out of your home, this closet keeps it out of your living space in one way or another. So it’s time to clean that closet. Here’s how:

  • Remove every item from your closet or storage space. For instance, if you use a shoe rack, clean this space.
  • Spray and wipe down your shelving and walls.
  • Sweep the floor to remove larger debris.
  • Vacuum to lift up small particles, dust, dirt, and sand.
  • Replace each item, decluttering as necessary.
